Micromaze Robot Hackathon @ University of York
This three-day event will challenge participants to design, build and program their own autonomous maze-solving robot while working closely with fellow network members.
Participants will be split into small teams and tasked with creating a robot capable of navigating a micromouse-style maze. Using a custom Raspberry Pi Pico W robotics platform, teams will design a laser-cut chassis, integrate sensors and motors, and develop control software in MicroPython to tackle the challenge.
The Hackathon, at the Institute for Safe Autonomy at the University of York, aims to provide a fun and collaborative environment for developing practical robotics skills while also helping shape a future outreach and continued professional development (CPD) activity for the wider community.
What to Expect
Participants will have access to a comprehensive robotics kit, including:
- Raspberry Pi Pico W-based robotics controller
- Custom-designed PCB with motor drivers and sensor interfaces
- Ultrasonic, infrared and time-of-flight sensors
- Micro metal gear motors and wheel options
- Laser-cutting and 3D-printing facilities
- MicroPython programming environment
Teams will be responsible for:
- Designing their robot chassis
- Assembling hardware
- Programming autonomous maze-solving behaviour
- Demonstrating their final solution at the end of the event

Tuesday 25 August

- Event close and departures from approximately 1:00–2:00 pm
Accommodation and Travel
The closest accommodation is the Travelodge York Hull Road, although a wide range of hotels are available across York.
For those travelling by train, the U1 and U2 bus routes connect York railway station directly to the University’s East Campus. Parking is available on campus, although charges may apply.

Participants will need to arrange:

- Wednesday evening meal
- Breakfasts
The Tuesday evening social meal will be organised, with attendees covering the cost of their own food and drinks. All travel, accommodation and subsistence
Get Involved
The organisers are also seeking a volunteer from the UKRAS STEPS Network to assist with event setup. The successful volunteer will arrive one day early and work alongside Rob to help prepare the venue, hardware and challenge activities. Contact Rob on Circle for more info.
