UK RAS STEPS Announces 2026 Special Interest Group Showcase at The National Robotarium
The UK RAS STEPS community is gearing up for one of its most significant events yet – the 2026 Special Interest Group (SIG) Showcase, taking place on 10 June at The National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Following the success of last year’s gathering at the Science Museum in London, this year’s Showcase marks a major milestone as the programme shifts its focus to the incredible achievements and future ambitions of our SIGs.
The annual event brings together Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) working across the robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) landscape to share progress, learn from one another, and shape the direction of technical development across the UK.
Whether you’re already active in a SIG or curious about areas such as Sustainable 3D Printing Practices, Automation of Liquid Handling, AI & Automation, Manufacturing for and with Robotics, ROS, or Microbots & Sensing, this year’s Showcase is designed to inspire, inform and invite you to get involved.
To celebrate the achievements of the UK RAS STEPS community, all eligible RTP attendees are invited to a fully funded evening reception and awards ceremony at Dynamic Earth, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic venues.
What to Expect: Innovation in Action
Throughout the day, participants will hear directly from SIG leads and members as they share:
- How SIGs are driving technical innovation and problem-solving across the UK
- Real-world case studies highlighting impact, collaboration and technical breakthroughs
- Success stories emerging from community-led experimentation and shared challenges
- Opportunities for RTPs to contribute to the final 18 months of the STEPS programme
With presentations, demonstrations and open discussions, the Showcase offers a unique chance to explore how SIGs support hands-on technical practice and elevate capability across the sector.
Learning From RTPs Across the UK
Lightning talks and case studies will bring to life the transformative experiences of RTPs who have taken part in STEPS-supported activities – from workshops and placements to international visits and SIG-driven projects.
Expect insights into:
- Skills gained through STEPS opportunities
- The power of peer-to-peer learning
- The real-world benefits of collaborative technical development
- How involvement in SIGs can shape both everyday lab practice and long-term career pathway
The Showcase will also provide an important update on the themes emerging across the RAS technical landscape, including shared challenges, capability gaps and new areas for strategic development. With STEPS entering its final 18 months, attendees will get an exclusive look at upcoming activities, planned support initiatives, and the legacy the programme aims to leave for the UK robotics community.
Attendees can also take part in guided tours of The National Robotarium, gaining an insider’s view of cutting-edge robotics research and facilities.
To ensure access for as many RTPs as possible, UK RAS STEPS will fully fund travel, accommodation and subsistence for eligible RTPs working in UK universities or RTOs.
