Empowering Research Technical Professionals: Achievements and Opportunities with the UK RAS STEPS Programme

As the Programme Manager for the UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) Strategic Technical Platform (STEPS), it’s been an exciting journey being a part of this impactful initiative. Over the past few years, we’ve made incredible strides in supporting and empowering Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) working in robotics and autonomous systems. Our mission? To uplift and accelerate the careers of RTPs through fully funded opportunities in training, knowledge exchange, placements, networking, and mentorship.
So, What Exactly is STEPS?
STEPS is designed to develop the next generation of technical talent and provide continued support for those already immersed in robotics. It’s all about creating a community of experts where knowledge flows freely, and collaboration drives innovation. At its core, STEPS fosters an environment that encourages skill development, collaboration, and career advancement – building a thriving ecosystem for technical professionals across the UK.
Our key objective is to help RTPs flourish in their careers. From training opportunities to networking events, placements, and workshops, we provide a range of resources designed to help technicians expand their expertise, grow professionally, and connect with others in the field. Whether you’re just starting out in robotics or you’re an experienced professional looking to deepen your knowledge, STEPS has something for everyone.
Task Groups: Nurturing Niche Communities
One of the standout features of the STEPS initiative is the creation of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). These groups can focus on areas of expertise that may be underrepresented or overlooked in the broader community. The goal? To give RTPs the chance to engage with niche areas within robotics where they can make meaningful contributions, further their skills, and connect with like-minded professionals.
Some of the exciting groups already taking shape include Liquid Handling Robotics, Recycling 3D Printed Materials, Manufacturing for Robotics and Robotics, AI & Autonomy. As these groups grow, we direct funding to help them access targeted training, networking opportunities, and the resources they need to succeed. It’s truly inspiring to see how these groups are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotics!
Are you passionate about a particular niche? Have an idea for a new SIG? Don’t hesitate to get in touch and share your vision!
Training and Development: Powering Career Growth
At the heart of the STEPS programme is training. We firmly believe that continuous learning is key to staying ahead in the fast-moving world of robotics. That’s why we allocate funding to support RTPs in accessing relevant and valuable training programs.
From cutting-edge artificial intelligence advancements to mastering machinery safety protocols and exploring new automation techniques, we ensure that professionals have access to the resources they need to thrive in their careers. Whether you’re aiming to deepen your expertise or explore new fields within robotics, we’ve got you covered.
On Monday, 31 March 2025, the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool played host to Elevating Automation in Liquid Handling: A Hands-On Exploration of Flexibility in Lab Tech. This event that brought together technical professionals, automation enthusiasts, and researchers to explore the latest advancements in laboratory automation.
The day kicked off with an energising welcome and a presentation from Opentrons, setting the stage for a deep dive into the capabilities of the Opentrons Flex. Attendees had the opportunity to take part in two hands-on sessions – first exploring the Quick Transfer and Protocol Designer tools, then diving into the Python API and AI integration capabilities.
From start to finish, the event showcased not just the power of the tools, but also the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of lab tech. Did you attend the event, or are you interested in future sessions? Stay connected with UKRAS STEPS to learn more about upcoming opportunities to explore the cutting edge of research automation.
Knowledge Exchange Placements: Real-World Experience and Collaboration
Another unique offering of the STEPS programme is Knowledge Exchange Placements. These placements allow RTPs to immerse themselves in different work environments, exchange ideas, and collaborate on innovative projects. The placements are fully funded, and we’ll either assist in finding an organisation that aligns with your career goals or help you connect with institutes suited to your development needs.
The chance to work in new environments, share knowledge, and apply your skills to real-world challenges can be a game-changer in your professional journey. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, you can learn more and apply here.
UK RAS STEPS Technical Showcase: A Must-Attend Event
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to be hosting the UK RAS STEPS Technical Showcase on June 18th, 2025. It will be an inspiring, thought-provoking day packed with presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities with industry experts, academics, and technical professionals from across the robotics community.
