Real‑World Robotics Insight: UK RAS STEPS Experience at NMIS
Fantastic to see UK RAS STEPS in action during a visit at National Manufacturing Institute Scotland on Thursday 12th February.
NMIS delivered a full programme centred on robotics in manufacturing, exploring applications, capability, and what implementation really looks like in practice.
The visiting RTPS were given the opportunities to dive into real-world robot capability, practical deployment challenges, and the technical skills needed to make automation work on the factory floor.
Hearing directly from organisations actively implementing robotics across the UK adds invaluable context for the future workforce and the technical professionals supporting these systems every day.
This is exactly the kind of activity that helps build capability across the sector. UK RAS STEPS is proud to support initiatives grow technical skills and showcase real pathways into robotics careers.
A great day’s visit to the state of the art NMIS facility in Scotland. Learning about the evolution and future of manufacturing in Scotland, witnessing new technologies in the flesh, how sustainable processes are becoming more mainstream. A great mix of talks, hands on learning and a tour of the facilities. Building camaraderie with RAS STEPS technicians, hearing their experiences and similar challenges we all face. – Thomas McGravie, Senior Technician, The National Robotarium
It was a hugely beneficial and eye-opening trip to NMIS. We were able to meet industry experts, find out about robotic solutions and software as well as get some hands-on practical experience with programming robot arms. Also we were fortunate to have a guided tour where we learnt about some of the recent projects NMIS has worked on in additive manufacturing, NDE, Digital Twins and more. It was an excellent day and many thanks to UKRAS STEPS for arranging it and making it possible. – James Fowler, Senior Technical Officer in Robotics & Assembly, Cranfield University
The event at NMIS Glasgow was an informative and hands on experience. The morning was filled with expert led talks on the current industry of robotics. As an apprentice this was the first time, I had really investigated robotics and learnt a lot, a fact that shocked me was that automation in industry cannot be 100% and that the maximum amount is around 60-70%. The workshop after lunch was hands on and fun way to learn about simple programming of a cobot. Overall, it was a great experience, you got to meet new people from a varied background. It was highly collaborative and interesting! – Maria C Da Costa Miguel, Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, Imperial College London
