Automated Liquid Handling
The Automated Liquid Handling Special Interest Group (SIG) brings together research technical professionals from across the UK who work with, or are interested in, automated liquid handling systems. This group provides a collaborative space to share best practices, develop technical expertise, and explore innovative approaches to laboratory automation.
Whether you are new to liquid handling automation or have years of experience, the SIG offers opportunities to network, learn, and contribute to shaping the future of automation in research environments.
Recent Activity

Earlier this year, the SIG held a highly successful workshop at the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool.
- Over 30 participants attended from universities, research centres, and industry.
- The workshop featured live demonstrations of automated liquid handling platforms, technical talks, and hands-on troubleshooting sessions.
Discussions highlighted common challenges such as protocol optimisation, data reproducibility, and instrument maintenance, alongside opportunities for collaborative solutions.
Feedback from participants emphasised the value of peer-to-peer learning and the importance of building a strong community of practice.
Upcoming Opportunities
Planning is already underway for the second Automated Liquid Handling Workshop, which will take place in early 2026.
- Format: Two-day event with a mix of presentations, interactive sessions, and networking opportunities.
- Focus Areas may include:
-
- Advanced workflows and protocol design
-
- Integration of automation with AI and data management tools
-
- Sustainability in laboratory automation
-
- Technician-led innovation case studies
More details, including dates and registration information, will be announced later in 2025.
