International Knowledge Exchange Visit to the Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa
UK RAS STEPS is pleased to announce a fully funded international knowledge exchange visit to the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, Italy.
This exclusive opportunity is designed for Research Technical Professionals working in Robotics and Autonomous Systems and will provide behind-the-scenes access to one of Europe’s leading robotics research environments.
About the visit
The core programme will take place from Monday 25 to Thursday 28 January 2027, with travel planned on either side.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Explore world-class robotics laboratories and facilities
- Meet internationally recognised researchers and technical specialists
- Learn about the infrastructure supporting cutting-edge robotics research
- Exchange technical knowledge and best practice
- Build connections with fellow technical professionals from the UK and Italy
Participants will visit several of IIT’s flagship research centres, including:
- Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems
- Centre for Human Technologies
- Centre for Convergent Technologies
The programme will showcase IIT’s interdisciplinary work across robotics, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, autonomous systems, rehabilitation technologies, wearable devices and bio-inspired technologies.
Participants will also have an opportunity to see internationally recognised robotic platforms—including iCub, HyQ, MOCA, STREAM and CONCERT—and learn how they are supported by shared technical infrastructure, specialist workshops and advanced prototyping environments.
Eligibility
This opportunity is open exclusively to Research Technical Professionals who:
- Work in Robotics and Autonomous Systems
- Are employed by a UK academic institution or Research and Technology Organisation
- Have not previously received funding for a UK RAS STEPS international visit
The opportunity is not open to academics, researchers, postdoctoral researchers, students or people working in industry.
Participation is subject to written confirmation from the applicant’s line manager.

Complete the Expression of Interest form and provide a statement of no more than 200 words explaining:
- How the visit would support your professional development
- How your technical expertise aligns with the opportunity
Expressions of interest will close at 12 noon on Wednesday 9 September 2026, or earlier if 30 applications are received.
After applications close, applicants will participate in a peer-review voting process. Ten participants will be selected from the applicant pool.
Successful applicants will be notified during the week beginning Monday 21 September 2026 and must attend an online briefing at 11:00 am on Thursday 24 September 2026.
Travel information
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Genoa. Travel is expected to be via Milan, followed by a 90-minute train journey.
Participants should plan to arrive on 23 or 24 January and depart on 29 January 2027 to allow sufficient time for travel.
