Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery applies from 20 January 2027. Drafted with autonomous and AI-driven machinery in view, it changes what those developing and operating robotic systems will be expected to demonstrate.

The EU AI Act introduces a separate, phased framework. Relevant requirements for high-risk AI embedded in regulated physical products are currently scheduled to apply from 2 August 2028.

During this 60-minute session, Dr Munasinghe will explain:

• Key requirements of the incoming regulatory framework
• Requirements affecting systems whose controllers can propose their own actions
• What conformity and technical evidence can mean in practice
• How UK duties sit alongside the EU regulatory regime
• Common evidence and compliance gaps in research environments

The webinar will conclude with a short demonstration from RAVASEC’s work. The same scenario will be run twice using an identical AI controller—once with an independent runtime safety layer in place and once without.

About the speaker

Dr Don Munasinghe is R&D Lead and co-founder of RAVASEC Ltd, a UK company developing an independent runtime safety layer for AI-driven and humanoid robots, together with the conformity evidence required under European machinery and AI regimes.

He completed his PhD, A Semi-Autonomous Real-Time IDPS for Cobots, at the University of West London. This research became ROS-PCon, which was developed from a concept into a commercial proposition through Innovate UK’s CyberASAP accelerator in 2022–23.
