Launching the UK RAS STEPS Community Voices Series: From Manchester to Tokyo
We are delighted to launch the UK RAS STEPS Community Voices video series, showcasing the experiences, achievements and professional journeys of Research Technical Professionals from across our network.
Through this series, community members share their personal stories, insights and lessons learned from taking part in UK RAS STEPS opportunities. From international visits and technical exchanges to networking, collaboration and professional development, these videos highlight the talent, expertise and impact of technicians working across the UK’s robotics and autonomous systems community.
First in the Series: From Manchester to Tokyo: Broadening Horizons Through UK RAS STEPS
Our first video features Alex Sleat, Technical Facility Manager at Manchester Metropolitan University.
In the video, Alex reflects on his UK RAS STEPS-supported visit to Tokyo and the lasting impact it has had on his professional and personal development. He discusses overcoming imposter syndrome, experiencing world-leading robotics research first-hand, and building valuable connections with colleagues across the international robotics community.
Alex’s story demonstrates how international opportunities can help Research Technical Professionals grow in confidence, expand their networks, and bring new ideas, knowledge and collaborations back to their institutions. It is a powerful example of how knowledge exchange and global engagement are helping to strengthen both individual careers and the wider UK robotics ecosystem.
