UK RAS STEPS at the 4th Technology Specialists Network Conference
UK RAS STEPS was pleased to take part in the 4th Technology Specialists Network (TSN) Conference, held in Stratford-upon-Avon. The event brought together more than 180 technical specialists from across the UK. Across two busy days, the conference showcased the breadth of expertise within the technical community and provided valuable space for discussion, learning and networking.
Our Programme Manager, Marie Daniels, was invited to present as part of a session highlighting progress from EPSRC-funded strategic technical platform projects. Marie shared updates on the activities and impact of UK RAS STEPS, alongside presentations from Catherine Lyall (X-CITED) and Philip Wilson (T‑PIKE), demonstrating the vital role these networks play in supporting and developing Research Technical Professionals (RTPs).
UK RAS STEPS was also delighted to support attendance at the conference by several RAS Research Technical Professionals. This funding enabled professional development opportunities and strengthened connections across the RAS community.
Two UK RAS STEPS representatives presented posters during the event:
- Rob Clowes showcased work on RTP impact in the Automated Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Liverpool, highlighting the essential contribution of technical expertise to research delivery.
- Andy Blight, Co‑Investigator of UK RAS STEPS, presented a poster outlining the work and impact of the UK RAS STEPS programme.
The conference opened on Day 1 with a welcome from Ian Hancox, followed by a keynote presentation from on the University of Warwick BioSRLs. Sessions later in the day highlighted inspiring outcomes enabled by TSN ROKS funding, including undergraduate summer placements, equipment sharing initiatives, and grant writing successes – with the latter presented by .
There was an update on the UK ITSS Career Pathways Action Group, including ongoing work on recognition and career development for technical staff. Further discussions reinforced the importance of collaboration between national RTP networks and investment in sustainable technical capability.
Overall, the conference offered two packed days of learning, discussion and connection, with plenty of opportunity for the all-important networking.
